HEELS
LADIES - this one is for you!! Practise your Jazz Dance technique in your character heels.... REGULARLY! When I am at auditions, I always seem baffled by the amount of ladies who struggle to execute basic jazz technique from a corner in their character shoes.
After the audition cuts, I have overheard many ladies make excuses why they didn't do well in their heels.....'my ankle hurts', 'I haven't worn my heels for ages now', 'the floor is so slippery in heels'.... As much as the industry is evolving and commercial heels are become extremely popular, traditional jazz technique in character shoes has not died and if you are looking for work as a dancer on cruise ships, musicals, showgirl work - more often than not you will be expected to dance in heels, even at the audition.
So my advise is to invest some time into your career and take class but in your heels. Practise until you are 100% confident or you are not going to perform your best at an audition and therefore you will be unlikely to book the job. The audition circuit can be a tough one. You don't need to make it any harder on yourself by being unprepared.
Remember, heels are a tool to your trade!
