COVER LETTERS

It’s in your hands, make a great first impression. A cover letter/email is the first introduction you will have with the person you are contacting. This is likely a casting director, agent, producer, director….

Lately, when I put out an advert/breakdown asking to ‘apply with a headshot and CV’, I have received many emails that are BLANK and just a headshot and CV attached! This is your first connection and contact with the person you are asking to work with. In person, this would be as simple as throwing a CV and Headshot in a casting team’s face without saying a word and walking away - not a great first impression!

▪️Write a great cover letter that sells yourself how you want to be.

▪️Keep the cover letter interesting but to the point.

▪️Explain to the person reading it why you are contacting them in the first place.

▪️Include links to your footage if you have it instead of full attached files in the body of the email - these can take a long time to download and also may pass on a virus so a link will be just fine to Youtube/Vimeo etc.

▪️DO NOT just do one MASS email with every casting director you know the email address of cc’d into the email - this is extremely impersonal and shows a lack of effort or interest in working for the company.

▪️If you are going to copy and paste a template of your email, be sure to change the name of the person you are writing to!

Communication is key in all areas of life and within the entertainment industry, as much of our work is physical and with our bodies, we must remember that we have to communicate confidently and politely. Have you been overlooking your cover letter and wondering why you aren’t hearing back from companies? Set yourself up for success and take some time to build your brand and who you want to be.
